About this role
The team is seeking a Senior Java Software Engineer with strong production experience in building and operating high-throughput, distributed systems. This remote contract role requires deep expertise in Apache Kafka and Kubernetes, with a focus on hands-on management and operation in production environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, operate, troubleshoot, and scale distributed systems.
- Manage and operate Kafka clusters, including topic creation, configuration, and lifecycle management.
- Handle partitions, consumer groups, replication, and fault tolerance in Kafka.
- Monitor Kafka performance, troubleshoot production issues, and design event-driven architectures.
- Deploy and manage applications in Kubernetes, ensuring application availability and health checks.
- Troubleshoot failed deployments and operational challenges within Kubernetes clusters.
- Develop scalable microservices using Java and Spring Boot, with a strong understanding of REST APIs.
- Utilize Redis for caching strategies and troubleshoot latency and performance issues.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience.
- Deep production expertise in Apache Kafka, including managing Kafka clusters and performance tuning.
- Strong production experience with Kubernetes, including application deployment and incident handling.
- Proficient in Java and Spring Boot, with experience designing fault-tolerant systems.
- Practical experience with Redis and distributed systems, understanding failure modes and trade-offs.
- Ability to design systems that operate reliably under heavy load and troubleshoot complex issues.
Experience: Candidates should have 5-8 years of relevant experience in software engineering, specifically with a focus on distributed systems.
